Regards, Miguel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: 17 Feb 2000 08:45:33 GMT From: Harry Renshall <renshall@rsplus01.cern.ch> Subject: Emergency Repair of afs servers afs6 and afs9 07:00-09:00, Sun. 20 Feb Newsgroups: cern.computing Over the last few weeks we have detected several instances of afs directory corruption on an IBM/AIX file server, afs6, and we are worried that there may be more undetected corrupt directories and an underlying software problem. There is an afs procedure, one used after a server crash, that can be run to verify directory structure validity and attempt repair and we believe we should run this on the afs6 server. It will take from one to two hours but during this time the server is inaccessible to users. This server runs a version of the afs software for which we have recent fixes and there is a second identical one, afs9. We intend to stop both servers, upgrade their software then run the verify and repair procedure in parallel. We plan to do this starting at 07:00 on Sunday 20 February. They should be finished by 09:00 at the latest but will be unavailable during this time. Both afs6 and afs9 contain several thousand user home directories. These users will be unable to login during this time and already started batch jobs of theirs may fail (new jobs should wait). You can see which server your home directory is on by running the command 'fs whereis $HOME'. If this interruption will seriously inconvenience you please contact me as soon as possible.
